Household Wealth in the National Accounts of Europe, the United States and Japan

André Babeau, Observatoire de l’Epargne Européenne
Teresa Sbano, PGAM Economic Research

This study analyses the structure of household wealth across the main industrialised nations through to a more detailed classification than that usually available from official national statistics. Figures on real and financial wealth and on liabilities have been brought together in one broad picture. On the financial assets side the research has also aimed at classifying instuments according to their risk: with reference to the broad category “Pension funds and Life insurance”, pension funds have been broken down into defined benefit, defined contribution and other private pension schemes and life insurance into unit/index linked policies and traditional ones. Moreover, listed and unlisted shares have been separated and mutual funds distinguished in money market, bond, equity and hybrid.
